Why Have Bariatric Surgery?

If you’re here either you’re thinking of having bariatric surgery, someone is recommending you get bariatric surgery, or maybe you had it already and you find yourself struggling.

First, let’s look at the “why.” If you think you can just “have the surgery and lose weight”, you might as well forget it. There’s no magic fix for weight loss. No pill, powder, or shake is going to “melt the pounds” away.

Bariatric surgery is no different. It’s just a tool, and if used incorrectly, it won’t work.

I hope you see by now that I’m not going to sugarcoat anything. I’m going to give you the hard truth. The truth that no one else wants to tell you. I do this because I truly want you to succeed. If I tell you anything else then I’ll only be doing you a disservice.

Why won’t anyone else tell you the hard truth?

Simple. Then they won’t have anything to sell you. Companies make huge fortunes selling people “cures” and “fixes” that will never work. They prey on your hopes and desperation. It’s like selling dreams for cash.

You will still have to do all the same things to lose weight even if you decide to have the surgery. You’ll have to make better food choices, take control of your portion sizes, and exercise. And when you get down to your target weight, you’ll have to maintain that weight. You can’t go back to old habits or else you’ll gain all the weight back plus even more.

So then why have the surgery? Surgery can help accelerate the process. You may be in a situation where you need to get the weight off as fast as possible.

I’m not trying to encourage or discourage you from having surgery. That’s a decision only you can make with the advice of your doctor.

But let’s face it, there’s a bigger issue here. The majority of us overeat or eat the wrong things due to an emotional problem. That’s at least my personal experience. Yes, I live with this battle too. It’s not easy, but it’s manageable. You just have to build your mental toughness and learn how to control that voice that tells you it’s ok to eat half a pack of cookies.

Did you ever watch the show “My Six Hundred Pound Life?” If you watched a few episodes, you’ll know what I mean. Every one of the people the show follows is in a dire situation. They all seem to think “if I could only get the surgery then I’ll be ok.” They finally get an appointment with the surgeon. He gives them specific instructions to lose weight before the surgery. How many of them actually do it? Save for one or two exceptions, none.

There are two reasons for losing weight before having surgery. One is the less you weigh, the safer the surgery will be. It also shrinks your liver and makes the procedure easier. I don’t know about you, but if someone is operating on me, I want it to be as easy as possible for them.

The second reason is to see if the patient will follow the program. If they won’t do it from the beginning then it’s less likely that they’ll follow through afterward.

Achieving success with weight loss is the same as achieving success in any other aspect of your life. You have to want it bad enough. It requires being determined.
